Kitty’s Pryde Gives Driver for the Dead #3 a 4/5

Review by “Troynos” at Kitty’s Pryde

The one problem with books being bi-monthly is that you stand the chance of forgetting what happened before. That was the problem I had when I first opened this issue to review it. I knew the basics of what had happened prior but I couldn’t immediately recall it. Then I started reading and that issue went away. Even without the benefit of a recap, just reading the story again it all made sense and I remembered the story.

I’m still not a fan of bi-montly format. I do like that this was a prestige issue though, expanded size and format. I’m not sure if this last issue would have benefited more from being normal sized though. The pacing of it seemed off with the major fight with the Werewolf at the beginning and the calming down of Graves “origin” in the middle, followed by the big fight with Fallow at the end.

The middle part took away the momentum of the story. Thats not to say it was bad, it wasn’t. The origin expands Graves place in this mythos, well also setting up for more stories and expansion later. Heffernan has given himself a doorway beyond the hoodoo of New Orleans. But it did stall the momentum and never quite got it back. The fight with Fallow was too quick, almost a let down. A big build-up and over quickly.

For its few faults, though, Driver For the Dead is a good read. It’s entertaining and interesting. The third issue isn’t as strong as the first two, but it is able to stand on its own.

Manco’s art is the best I have ever seen from him. The characters are clear, with tight linework, something he’s never been really known for. His art has always had a roughness and exaggeration to it, not so in this series and the third issue is the best yet.

The human characters have an almost cleanliness to them. They stand out as clean and good, if art could be said to be good or evil, where the undead creatures radiate wrongness. Manco conveys this feeling through his linework.

It’s really nice to see on the pages.
